In this edition of "Healthy Steps with Dr. Ginger," Dr. Ginger talks with Andrea about healthy seeds that should be a part of your regular diet, including, flax seeds, chia seeds and black seeds.
Flax seeds are high in omega-3s (especially the brown and golden variety) and are also good for improved bowel function, as they are high in fiber. You should grind them for best benefit because the healthy oils and nutrients are then released.
Try to use flax seeds on your food throughout the week. One-to-two tablespoons of ground flax seed several times a week can help improve ovary function, reduce breast pain associated with menstruation, help reduce hot flashes and more.
Chia seeds (smaller than flax seeds) also include omega-3s, but they are higher in fiber than flax seeds and contain high levels of antioxidants. These seeds are good for digestion, heart health, bone health and diabetics.
Chia seeds should be white or brown in color and should be opened up to optimize the health benefits.
Last, but certainly not least, black seeds (also known as coriander, black sesame and black cumin) are a very potent spice that may already be in your kitchen cabinet. These seeds hold many fatty acids, vitamins B1, B2 and B3 and antioxidants.
Also available in an oil, like flax seed, black seed oil works nicely in your juices or smoothies. However, more is not necessarily better with this seed. This seed helps prevent against MRSA and is even being tested to help fight pancreatic cancer.
All of these seeds are available at your local grocery stores or health food stores and should become part of your regular health and wellness routine.
