Ep47 - When Will I be Good Enough? From Replacement Child to Healing: Dr. Barbara Jaffe

From the Show: Which Way is Life
Summary: What is replacement child syndrome, how to recognize it, and how to recover from it with professor and author Dr. Barb Jaffe.
Air Date: 3/23/17
Duration: 24:08
Host: Bill Klaproth
Guest Bio: Barbara Jaffe, EdD
Dr. Barbara JaffeBarbara Jaffe, EdD, is an award-winning English professor at El Camino College, California and is a Fellow in UCLA’s Department of Education. She has offered countless workshops to students to help them find their writers’ voices through writing non-fiction.

Her college has honored her by naming her Outstanding Woman of the Year and Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Her wish for this book is twofold: first, to help other “replacement children” understand and accept their often-challenging journeys as she reveals her own. Second, to offer a cautionary tale to parents who have, perhaps unwittingly, set the stage in their own families for a child who serves as a replacement for another or is viewed as "less than" by comparison.

Barbara also shares her inner journey to wholeness so that readers might be able to relate to their own challenges and growth whether they are replacement children or just feel "less than" at times.

Originally a fourth generation San Franciscan, Barbara has lived in Los Angeles her entire adult life. She and her husband Paul, a psychiatrist, have raised three sons and boast of one amazing grandson and one incredible dog.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

High Five Highlights:

  • If your mom was still with us today, what would she think of your transformation? I think she would be very proud of me. There would be pride. She would be proud of the woman I am.
  • Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your younger self? Be gentle with yourself. Be as kind to yourself as you are to other people.
  • Tell me about someone that inspires you today? My sister-in-law Marilyn, because she is a beautiful person and gives of herself every day without asking for anything in return.
  • Do you have a favorite quote or book you can share? “It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end.”
  • Finish this sentence: “Throughout my life the most important thing I’ve learned is...”  To honor myself with the love and respect and care that I give other people, and as a result, then I can be the most productive wonderful person to other people.
